Radio Free Palmer received a Friends of the Elks award at the Palmer Elk’s annual Law and Order dinner on Saturday, October 8 at the Elks Lodge. Other media recipients were The Frontiersman, Country Legends, and KMBQ. I went alone to the event and met and talked with several of the Elks. I felt very welcomed.
The real awardees of the night, though, were from Palmer Correctional Center, Mat Su Pre Trial, the Alaska State Troopers, Palmer Police, and Goose Creek Corrections. This has been an annual event for the Elks and Radio Free Palmer was honored to participate. It was a bittersweet event for the Palmer Correctional Center since it will be closing. Superintendent Anderson received a special award from the Elks for the 15 years she’s been recognizing her staff at this event.
The Elks’ Lodge is a lovely setting for events with the windows looking out on Finger Lake. I can attest that the meal –roasted purple potatoes and carrots, salad, green beans, rolls, and a choice of quail or roast beef – was quite tasty. The dessert selection was great, too.
The circles of events and groups and their good work in the community continue to surprise and delight me.
